How I Plan To Exploit The Billion-Dollar ‘Creator Economy’ Opportunity In 2025.
The creator economy could double from $250 billion to half a trillion dollars by 2027.
I remember making my first $1 online.
In 2019, I signed up for the Medium Partner Program. Wrote my first article. And got paid. My mind has never been the same.
Now, I’m a full-time creator-solopreneur traveling the world.
The opportunity in front of us.
We are on the verge of a revolution.
The combination of:
Social media distribution.
Ease of collecting online payments.
Internet penetration to connect everyone.
Artificial intelligence reduces the costs of delivery.
This means becoming a creator has never been easier.
Goldman Sachs predicts that the creator economy could double from $250 billion to half a trillion dollars by 2027.
This is the opportunity most people are starting to see.
Forgive me. I lied. The revolution is already here.
It’s just not equally distributed.
I’m living proof that this lifestyle is possible and profitable.
More and more people are waking up to this reality.
I’m often asked:
If everyone is a creator, who will consume the content?
Well, we are all already creators (and consumers).
You already post content and write comments and stories.
If you’ve got a social media channel, you’re a creator.
Congrats.
Welcome to the club.
But you also consume content every day.
So where is the problem?
When you become a creator, that doesn’t mean you suddenly stop consuming content.
Creation can’t happen without consumption.
As a creator, you probably end up consuming more.
Every writer is a reader.
Every academic is a student.
Every buyer is a seller.
Every seller is also a buyer.
Society functions through mutual exchange.
Now, we just have the ability to do it on a global scale.
I don’t believe in saturation.
There is an endless demand for quality content.
Bloomberg predicts that a billion new users will join the internet. This growth will mainly come from Africa and Southeast Asia, achieving greater internet penetration.
The demand for content is about to skyrocket.
Other trends include:
A combined population of 800+ million people
Indonesia already has the highest levels of content consumption in the world.
The median age in Africa and Southeast Asia is under 30 years.
We have a young, connected, and technology-literate population about to get stable access to the internet.
This generation grew up with content their whole life.
My big guess is that they want to join the creator economy and build a business.
I did.
So why wouldn’t they?
But with any opportunity, there are challenges.
I see demand for coaches like me who can help them monetize, market, and sell their products and services.
When everyone is digging for gold, sell shovels.
Content creation is the vehicle of the future.
I’m currently working from Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam.
While at my co-working space, I randomly spoke to staff members.
Most are under 30 and highly educated.
I asked: What’s your long-term goal?
The answer:
Being a full-time content creator.
They had no desire to:
Stay in a 9–5 job long-term.
Climb the corporate ladder.
Work for someone else for the rest of their lives.
I heard this same pattern repeated over and over again.
Not just from people at the co-working space.
I met expats, remote workers, and backpackers who want the freedom to choose their limits.
They see content creation as the vehicle to do so.
This trend is reflected in a recent finding. A Deloitte study found that 46% of Gen Z work part-time or full-time alongside their jobs.
Young people are using their one-person business to:
Build financial security.
Build it so they can leave their job.
Add an additional layer of income protection.
From Saigon to Singapore, Gen Z wants a different way of working.
I’ve committed to Southeast Asia.
Over the next 2–3 years, I plan to base myself out of Singapore, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Thailand.
I’ve got unfair advantages:
I’m under the age of 35.
I’ve got an Australian accent.
Raised and educated in Australia.
I was born in Southeast Asia (Singapore).
I’ve got skills in writing, sales, and marketing
I’m a growing creator with an existing 90k+ audience.
I’m a good communicator with words and public speaking.
This means I can operate in many worlds.
But why does this matter?
Two reasons:
Trust
Authority.
A recent study found that people trust the news, journalists, and traditional media less, and don’t want to get life advice from a boomer who grew up without the internet.
People want to learn from someone who:
Looks like them.
Values their goals.
Speak to their experience.
Understands their context.
What can you do?
Combine all your unfair advantages and exploit this opportunity.
The future is here
America, Europe, and much of the Western world are in the creator economy.
Now, the opportunity is coming for Southeast Asia.
I plan to exploit it by:
Deeply understanding the opportunity.
Focusing on servicing the growing demand, not competitors.
Aligning myself with the goals of human nature.
Building my authority and trust with a target audience.
Being in the right place, at the right time.
Opportunity = luck + preparation.
